WINDS OF CHANGE

Keeping the elements in check

You told us what to avoid if we wanted to make the perfect windbreaker:

1

A baggy, shapeless cut

2

No inside pockets

3

Flimsy fabric and sub-par manufacture

4

Lack of vintage credentials

Cheaper than a vintage Vespa and far more reliable

Like a duck’s back

Ventile was the only way to go for this one. It’s a tightly woven cotton fabric, with weather-beating credentials stretching back to its use in flyers’ jackets in WW2. What’s the trick? Well… when it comes into contact with moisture the cotton fibres swell, making the stitches tighten, meaning water can't get through. Beautifully simple, amazingly effective. The Ventile fabric we chose for this one weighs 200g/m2 and has a water resistance rating of 5/5. That means it can rain cats and dogs before your shirt gets damp.

Certified tough nut

Ventile's not just water-repellent and tight-knit enough to keep the drafts out, it's also extremely tough. Much as we hope you trust us, you don’t have just our word for it, we got the Windbreaker put through its paces in the lab. The results: it aced the pilling test with full marks, and racked up a tidy 4.5/5 in the ruffling test. Of course, considering its life-preserving heritage, hardiness should come as no surprise.

Room to spare

Description : There’s nothing worse than running out of pocket space, having to constantly shift all your belongings around like you’re playing a game of Buckaroo. The Windbreaker has two proper-sized handwarmer pockets and one secure inside pocket — built with phones in mind. So, unless you’re really going to town on bits and bobs, you should be sorted.

Cutting the mustard

You warned us about ship-shod shape when it came to the Windbreaker, and we listened. You wanted tailored, we made it tailored. Not only is the cut tidier but this tough, brand-new jacket’s also got all the classic clout and vintage nods, with a shape that’ll sit well with anything. No 1940s battle smock required.

Zip it, will you

A zip is a zip, right? Wrong. There’s zips, and then there’s zips. What we’ve got here is very much the latter. It’s a double zip from YKK, so you can unzip from the bottom as well as the top. You might think that’s a feature you’d never use, but you’ll be surprised.

Tell-tale tartan

What’s a windbreaker without a checked lining? It’s a key detail that’s been in place since the jacket was invented, so who are we to rock the boat? We chose 100% organic cotton, woven by the pros at Emanuel Lang in France, who we trust with a fair amount of the fabrics we use.

Necktar

One of the most distinctive features of a true windbreaker is the collar, or lack of one, to be precise. The no-nonsense standing tab collar is nearly as key to a windbreaker’s character as its weather-repelling clout. Ours closes with two press buttons and has a ribbed lining, so — should ever need to batten down the hatches, you can do so in comfort.

When the going gets tough

Durability is always high on our hit list. While Ventile’s inherent hardiness goes a long way, the construction of our Windbreaker plays a big part too. We’ve reinforced all the stress points on this jacket and added 1x1 ribbing to keep draughts at bay. Long story short, you can relax, stretch at will, windmill your arms while running down a windswept hillside… whatever you fancy. You’re covered.

Portuguese perfection

Excellent seafood, stunning beaches, fortified wine and vinho verde… Portugal’s got a lot going for it — not least an impressive history of making fantastic clothes. We put our heads together with the fine people at Carjobel to rustle up this little number. They smashed the assignment so you can exude all the James Dean attitude you want come those mid-season showers.
