Smart tech

The secret? Ventile.

It’s a thread that joins British Royal Airforce, North Pole explorers and Mt Everest climbers across the ages. We’ve already dished out a few such stories in our Friday article, so we’ll switch our attention to our Raincoat’s unique water-repellent fabric. Ventile.

Vade Retro, damn water

Ventile is a proper innovator when it comes to tech gear. It's a 100% cotton fabric that swells in contact with water, making it tighter than a club bouncer. During World War II, it saved the lives of many a pilot by affording them a few extra minutes in the freezing sea. Now it's used to save you from… the rain.

Raincoat for all seasons

There are two sides to staying dry though. The first being from rain itself, and the second from your own treacherous body once the clouds clear and the sun pops out. Luckily Ventile is not just waterproof but also breathable. Ours weighs in at 240g/m2, making it light enough to comfortably handle mild swings in temperature without breaking sweat. Useful in for both spring and summer. Unfortunately.

A real top layer

A key trait of a good coat is whether it can comfortably sit over additional layers of clothing. We've designed ours with this in mind. The fit is well tailored, but it doesn’t baulk at the first sign of a chunky jumper~~, shirt, or t-shirt without having to hold your breath.~~

Looking for Eric’s collar

Think of 'The King' ambling through the streets of Manchester thinking of sardines with this fine 9-cm collar turned up against the seagulls. Or reserve any collar-turning for the worst of the elements. It’s up to you.

Classier pockets

One of the big changes on our latest version is that we switched flapped pockets for slanted welted ones. Much more conducive to a smoother smartphone action or simply to keep your mitts out of trouble. As well as being more functional, they also just look good this way.

On the cuff

We've completely redesigned the strap on the cuff. You can say goodbye to our old arrow-cut version for this sleeker, more minimalist rectangular strap. It ties in better with what you asked for and our general look.

Elegance has a name

And it's Smart Raincoat. A reassuringly stiff, quality feel. A discreet buttonhole, standout collar complete with button placket for complete protection from the wind. A shoulder cut for added comfort and a clean, crisp drape that falls mid-thigh. And all in Ventile. What more can we say? Except that we all need a bit of technical sophistication in our wardrobes.
