Summer classics with staying power

Tough enough for the court, ready for everything else

4,000 of you got some pent-up tennis shoe disappointment off your chests. We sieved through all that feedback and boiled it right down. These were the repeat offenders on the tennis shoe let-downs list:

What you didn’t want

1

The canvas gave way too easily

2

The outsole wore thin in a heartbeat

3

They weren’t comfortable

4

The outsoles peeled away

Hole in none

You’ve just got this year’s pair of canvas pumps looking worn in and what happens? That’s right, your big toe makes an unscheduled appearance right through the canvas. Back to square one…Well, not with these. We selected some seriously hardwearing, half-braided organic cotton canvas, made by Telatex over in France. It’s the same stuff we use for our tried and tested Tough Trousers.

Court-ready, just in case

You don’t have to play tennis in these, but we wanted them to be up to the task, just in case. So we made the outsoles extra hard-wearing. Unlike those fly-by-night pumps you’ve been buying a pair of each year, these are made to stick around. The rubber’s 100% recycled, which could be a nice talking point, if you get really jammed up for chat on holiday.

Star comfort

We decided it was high time canvas tennis shoes matched their chilled aesthetic with some high-level chilling-friendly comfort. That’s in great part due to the Strobel construction, where the upper is sewn onto the insole before everything is expertly fixed to the outsole. With the extra comfy and easily removable insole and soft off-white twill lining, your feet will be on cloud nine.

No bells, whistles or zippers here

We spent a lot of time getting the lines on these just right. No platform soles, double-long tongues, zips or jazzy tweaks - just a seriously tidy pair of tennis shoes with a sleek shape in keeping with the type’s classically understated lineage. When a classic’s designed right, and made by expert craftsmen, you don’t need to distract the eye with bells or whistles.

Co-created, big time

We always get input from our co-creators (that’s you) before we whip out the draft pads and sharpen our pencils, but these were something of a co-creation highpoint. 70,000 of you told us what you needed from your summer footwear, with 4,000 of you sharing how they had failed you in the past. That’s quite the sample group, merci.

Eyelets on the prize

And, in this case, the prize is having laces that actually work. We went for tough metal eyelets - five on each side - that’ll let your laces move easily. Less drag, less fraying, more use. It’ll be some time until you have to pull the old skip-four-eyelets-to-make-half-a-shoelace-work trick.

Shower-proofed

We’ve got a hunch there might be a few unwanted downpours this summer. We know, it’s hard to believe. But just in case we’re right we went ahead and added a PFC-free water-repellent treatment to the canvas.

Big decisions

We wouldn’t be cruel enough to fix all the issues you had with summer canvas shoes then produce them in a day-glow polka dot with a tartan overcheck. We went - shockingly - with some tried and tested, classic summer hues. It’s over to you on the picking, but remember your choice’ll be with you for many summers to come so do so wisely.

Grand slam tennis shoes

That’s the long and the short of it. A pair of canvas tennis shoes that’ll actually last. Built for summer, with comfort and durability in mind. You don’t have to play tennis in them, but it’s nice to know that you could without them exploding before you make it to the net. The ball’s in your court.
