Leave your coats at the door

When’s a jacket a jacket, and not a coat? It’s a philosophical quandary we at Asphalte toyed with for years before settling the matter: a jacket stops at your waist. It might sound obvious, but length’s a major failing in many warm-weather hopefuls. A summer jacket should be tidy, practical, lightweight and… well, not a coat. We nailed step one, but we’re just getting started…

Late passes at the ready

We all know the feeling: a glorious spring day out’s looking like rolling into the evening. No one’s ready for home, the night’s young, but the first ripple of goosebumps just ran up your forearm and it’s only 5.30 pm… Do you grin and bear it for six more hours? Suggest finding a spot inside and risk starting an exodus for home? Hard choices. This is where a lightweight jacket saves the day. Ours specifically.

Denim done right

The 12oz denim version of our Zip Jacket’s made by the stand-up guys at Candiani. They’ve been making jeans since 1938, just outside Milan. Why did we choose them? Well — on top of 80-plus years of denim expertise — they’re just as interested in sustainability as we are. Regenerative agriculture? Check. Organic denim? Check. Top spec summer-weight denim jacket? Most definitely.

Cotton à la Française

Perhaps you aren’t the denim jacket sort, but don’t fret: the Zip Jacket also comes in a 100% cotton twill version. The ideally weighted, breezy 240g/m2 material’s provided by Telatex, the French fabric maestros, with 160 years of experience in making hardwearing clobber.

Cut to the chase, or to the pub garden

Getting the materials right was only part of the challenge. A mid-season jacket needs to be tidy. We cut ours on the short side, with a slightly tailored take-in at the sides. We even built in a subtly elasticated waist at the back, meaning you’ll enjoy freedom of movement whether you’re cycling along the promenade or balancing a tray of seven G&Ts.

Turn up whenever…

No sloppy-placket-peril here: we took time with this collar. We went for lightly rounded edges with carefully studied proportions, opting for some light fusing. That means it’ll have the strength to pull off a cavalier James Dean-esque turn-up, or the wherewithal to hold the fort down in a summer breeze.

Pockets worthy of the name

Some designers seem to think that warm weather means people stop locking their doors and paying for stuff. We know better. So we fitted out the Zip Jacket with a button-fastened inside pocket and two side pockets big enough for non-Borrower bits and bobs. We even designed them so that they won’t spew your valuables across the floor the moment you take a seat. Novel, right?

A zip for the ages

Look at us. We nearly got to the end of our write-up without mentioning the Zip Jacket’s zip. Needless to say, we weren’t going to let down the lovingly-sourced, impeccably-weighted materials and seriously suave shape with a slip-shod zipper. We called in the ever-reliable YKK zip, it’s seriously solid top to bottom.

Your new mid-season signing

We’re assuming you get the picture. A tidily-cut, lightweight, midseason jacket that’ll keep you warm when the evening settles on your long weekenders. Denim’s on point. Cotton’s flawless. Pockets’ll hold stuff. Collar’ll stay put. Job done, really.
