Care Guide for the Boat Shoes

These Boat Shoes aren’t just any old kicks. They’re built to last longer than a century-old oak. We’ve knocked them up to stick around for 1,000 years, and we’re banking on you to cherish them as much as Davy Jones treasures his Black Pearl.

The Lowdown

We’ve thrown everything but the kitchen sink into our Boat Shoes. They’re made to tackle miles of pavement, dirt tracks, and sandy beaches without batting an eyelid, but they’re counting on a bit of TLC from you to make the distance.

You know the score: The better you treat 'em, the longer they’ll stick with you, and that kicks off with three daily must-dos.

  1. Try not to wear them for two days on the trot. As you might know, leather’s a natural material, just like you, particularly sensitive to its environment. It’s not a fan of pollution, humidity and sweat. This means your shoes will need a welcome breather between outings.
  2. In these downtime moments, pop in some wooden shoe trees to absorb the moisture muck and keep them looking sharp over the years
  3. End of the day, you might be tempted to kick 'em off using one shoe to pry off the other – but let's not go down that road. Take a minute to ease them off properly before slipping into your cosy slippers. They’ll thank you for it.

Then it’s onto the spruce-up bit.

Sprucing up suede shoes

If you picked the suede Boat Shoes, here’s the drill:

  • Kick things off by giving them a good brush to get rid of any dust and debris.
  • Next up, grab a crepe brush and give them a good going-over to perk up the suede.
  • Time for a bit of elbow grease – if you’ve got a suede cleaner, now’s the time to shine.
  • Wrap it up with a waterproofing session, and a few sprays now and then to keep them safe from the wet.

And that’s your lot.

Buffing the smooth leather version

Picked the smooth leather in brown? Piece of cake. Here’s how to care for them.

  • Start by giving them a good dust-off, pop the shoe trees in for a solid base, and gently work them over with a shoe scraper to ditch the dirt.
  • Move on to cleaning and feeding them, using a clear cream or brown wax paste and a soft cloth, really working it in.
  • If you’re feeling extra, you could go for a few swipes with a polishing brush now, but it’s not a must.
  • A few sprays of of waterproofing will have them ready to face the next downpour or wave.

And there you have it.

FYI, OUR BOAT SHOES ARE SOFT ON YOU AND THE PLANET

Since 1 January 2024, the New French environmental legislation known as The AGEC Law stipulates transparency from our lot in the fashion industry so that you can make an informed purchase. As you can imagine, this is something that we fully support at Asphalte. So here's some additional information about our Boat Shoes:

  • They’re 100% recyclable once taken apart, which means that the day its services are no longer required every component can be fully recycled. However, you might want to consider making someone else happy by passing it on to a friend, family member or donating it to a charity. By giving rather than selling, you're contributing to a virtuous cycle and helping those who need it most.
  • Unlike many garments that release microplastics during washing, our Boat Shoes have been designed to minimise that. Plastic microfibres are tiny particles of plastic that have a negative impact on aquatic and land ecosystems.
  • They do not contain any hazardous materials. They’re manufactured in compliance with strict standards aimed at eliminating the use of harmful substances and other chemical nasties.
  • They do not contain any recycled materials. We try and incorporate recycled materials whenever we can, unfortunately, it hasn’t been possible to do so with the Boat Shoes

There, you have it all now.

Thanks!

Give them proper care and you’re halfway there. If you want those true battleships of shoes to last a lifetime, you know what you have to do. If we've missed something or you have any questions hit us up in the comment section below or here support@asphalte.com.
